PSA for existing users: DO NOT UPDATE THIS CREATION IF YOU USE MODDED HABS. Useful Brigs v6 changes the requirements for modded habs to be compatible/supported.

Please be patient while other authors make the necessary changes to become Useful Brigs v6 compatible.

Useful Brigs helps you resolve conflicts non-lethally and makes your ship's brigs... useful!

How It Works

How to send an NPC to the brig

Useful Brigs provides new interaction options which will appear on NPCs at certain times, depending on if you use Useful Brigs by itself, or in combination with Non-Lethal Framework. Both Non-Lethal Framework and Useful Brigs contain their own Release interaction options; one for releasing a prisoner who has been restrained (Non-Lethal Framework) and the other for releasing prisoners who are in a cell in your brig (Useful Brigs). See below for a full breakdown.

Useful Brigs only:

  • When an NPC is knocked out or pacified using Diplomacy or Manipulation (for Send to Brig)
  • When an NPC is considered a brig prisoner (for Release)

Non-Lethal Framework only:

  • When an NPC is knocked out or pacified using Diplomacy or Manipulation (for Restrain)
  • When an NPC is considered restrained (for Release)

Useful Brigs + Non-Lethal Framework:

  • When an NPC is knocked out or pacified using Diplomacy or Manipulation (for Restrain)
  • When an NPC is considered restrained (for Release and Send To Brig)
  • When an NPC is considered a brig prisoner (for Release)

When you choose the Send To Brig interaction option and you have enough brig space, the prisoner is assigned a bed. 1 prisoner per 1 bed (a bunkbed is 2 beds as there are 2 cots/mattresses), because we aren't monsters. If you do not have any free beds, you will get a notification informing you of this. Prisoner gear is moved to the player's cargo (additional filters available in Game Option), so you aren't missing out on loot. Some items will not go to cargo, but immediately be moved to your character, such as keys, credits, and quest items.

Now that you have prisoners, you can exchange them for credits with the appropriate faction, whether you decide to be a law bringer or a slaver. Each faction has their own prisoner criteria and bonus payouts depending on the characteristics of your prisoners. If you have prisoners who are classified as criminals, you can turn them into UC Security, UC SysDef, or Freestar Security. The Crimson Fleet and Red Mile will take any prisoner, regardless of classification.

For example, the Crimson Fleet will pay more for women and children, but generally pay less per prisoner. However, the Crimson Fleet will take any prisoner. The UC will pay more per prisoner with a bonus for legendary enemies, but they must belong to a "criminal" faction.

How to sell prisoners

Prisoners are categorized into 2 groups: Criminals and Civilians.

You can turn in prisoners by speaking to guards associated with factions who accept prisoners.

  • Criminals: UC Security, UC SysDef, or Freestar Security
  • Civilians and criminals: Crimson Fleet, Red Mile security, or Va'ruun security

How to release prisoners

  • Visit the prisoner in the cell — a Release interaction option will be visible.
  • Use the Brigs Control Terminal to release individual or groups of prisoners.
  • While in space, use the Brigs Control Terminal to jettison individual or groups of prisoners.
  • Give them the sweet release of death yourself.

How to remove freed or dead prisoners

Dead bodies and freed prisoners are removed from your ship at takeoff and landing. Freed prisoners who are alive will return to their original location.

Additional notes

It was difficult to get prisoners to behave for many reasons. If they get rowdy and leave their cell, you can always edit your ship. The brigs are "refreshed" at takeoff, landing, editing of the ship, and changing of the home ship. The more prisoners you have, the less likely you can spam adding a new prisoner — there is a lot of logic in this creation, and functions can become burdened/expensive fast; the fewer prisoners you have the better this creation performs. Although I don't know of a hard cap on how many prisoners you could have.

Top bunks facing the opposite direction will exit through the wall. I don't have a good solution for this at this time, but it looks good when in use, so I'm keeping it for the time being.

As of v4.0, prisoners will now be more... lively. Yeah! Lively. Prisoners will perform random activities within their cell.

Why did my prisoner disappear?

There can be a number of reasons for this. Some NPCs are cleaned up by their respective quest/event.

Compatibility & Extensibility

All ship hab units that include brigs in them within the base game (including their later-added empty variants) are supported. Here is a list:

  • HopeTech Armory 2x1
  • Taiyo Armory 2x1
  • Deimos Brig 2x2
  • HopeTech Brig 2x2
  • Nova Galactic Brig 2x2
  • Stroud Brig 2x2
  • Taiyo Brig 2x2

In vanilla Starfield, 2x2 habs are only available from special ship services vendors, such as Deimos Staryard for the Deimos Brig 2x2 or the HopeTown ship services technician for the HopeTech Brig 2x2.

Any brigs added by creations will need to make specific changes in order to be supported/recognized by Useful Brigs.

Useful Brigs was designed to be used with Non-Lethal Framework. No patch required.

Thanks

Special thanks to MsDarkness1313 for thorough testing of Useful Brigs v6.0!
