What is it? Gameplay Style: RP, Casual, Cargo Hauling, Modded Gameplay Combat Capability: Good
Eag's Ship Shop began a project to resurrect a handful of the United Colonies Navigator Corps vessels. We were granted three vessel blueprints from the UC Cabinet, and were given permission to rebuild and distribute said vessels to the general public!
This is the second out of three Navigator Corps vessels we rebuilt. The Corbita-Class Freighter. This hulking monster was the shining star of the lesser-known UC Navigator Corps Logistics Division.
An extremely expensive vessel to manufacture, it had cargo capacity well beyond most HopeTech trucks and a state-of-the-art Grav drive to handle the mass and to keep jump distance pace with a Navigator Corps expeditionary fleet. And due to the vessel's nature of hauling many goods and materials, it was equipped with quad C-Class particle Turrets for pirate defense.
Because the Corbita was engineered to be able to carry such large mass, it needed to be able to take off and land under load at planets with varying factors above the standard 1 Earth Gravity. As such, the Deimos Staryards engineers who originally designed the Corbita actually ended up using the heavy duty Nova Galactic take off and landing gear system rather than their own Deimos engineered systems, which were definitely not built for this task. You will never find this note, however, in any of the original flight manuals or promotional materials for the Corbita.
It was the placement of the side-mounted Nova Galactic landing system that made a legendary UC Navigator Corps Corbita crewman, James "Jimothy" Freeman, lovingly give the Corbita-Class it's well earned nickname: "Tardigrade." And it was an apt name he chose: This ship is one tough sonofagun and can brave almost any atmosphere, temperature, or gravity!
External design-wise, the Corbita follows the same Navigator Corps custom designs we've seen in the blueprints the UC Cabinet gave us. Most iconically, the underside keel-mounted Ares bridge. Sarah Morgan, previously director of the UC Navigator Corps, has been our historical guide for the whole rebuild process. She has mentioned multiple times the Navigator Corps vessels were designed this way intentionally, because personnel spent an incredible amount of time "looking down."
In the Corbita's blueprints, we saw footnotes from some of the original Deimos designers referencing Ancient Earth lighter-than-air rigid airships (circa 1931 AD/United States of America Navy) and their own under-side mounted conning and control rooms (called "control cars"). It offered those crews an incredible view of the lands below the ship as they helmed and commanded those ancient skyfaring vessels, and we at Eag's Ship Shop think that this is where some of the original designers gained inspiration from.
The Corbita was not necessarily a ship of exploration, but was a very important member of any long-term Navigator Corps expedition. It would accompany a larger fleet to haul any additional cargo and goods that exceeded the rest of the fleet's vessels' mass capacity. And it would also generally be carrying materials to construct semi-prefab planetary outposts and habitats.
Today, Eag's Ship Shop genuine rebuild of the Corbita, can still do all of these things. This colossus of a freighter was originally designed by Deimos to keep you and your crew comfortable and payload safe. So if you're a freighter captain looking for a unique and historical cargo vessel, look no further. Step over to New Atlantis today to order your own piece of hauling history!
