Ron Hope wanted to expand his ship offerings outside of his usual freighter captain demographic. As part of Eag's Ship Shop's contract with HopeTech, we suggested he might wish to break into the explorers' market. His curiosity was piqued, and we were given the green light to begin designing a new rugged exploration craft.

Enter the Astral Engine Model EJ. Inspired by Ancient Earth overland vehicles, particularly a manufacturer named Willys Overland, who were renowned during their time for producing rugged and effective vehicles to traverse some of the harshest terrain. We wished to pay homage to this Ancient manufacturer and adopt their two-letter model naming scheme they used for their reliable vehicles. The Astral Engine Model EJ (Extended-Jump) captures the spirit of adventure and exploration that these Ancient Earth explorers had while operating these vehicles in lands unknown.

Built on the frame of the Astral Engine freighter, the Model EJ is a no-frills explorer. Easy to maintain, cheap to build, and simple to pilot during re-entry, the EJ is the answer to the expedition crew who doesn't need "creature comforts." The EJ features a full deck dedicated to crew living, a research lab, fabrication facilities, a keel observation deck, and more! It may not be a very pretty sight, but it will take you and your crew to the edge of the galaxy and back in one piece.
