RYOS (Roll Your Own Start)
By Wynterhawk
Community Rating
This mod provides immersive alternative starts that let you begin the game's main quest at a time of your choosing or ignore it entirely. The mod's main features are:
CUSTOM STARTS:
A custom start allows you to begin your game exactly as you want. It allows you to:
Start on Montara Luna at the Freestar Militia Impound Facility (a new RYOS POI).
Pick your starting Credits, from 5K to 640K to purchase ships and gear.
Purchase weapons, and supplies from one of four vendors with huge merchandise inventories.
Buy one of the 90+ ships offered by the RYOS ship services technician.
Purchase from an extended list of ship upgrades typically not available until later in the game.
Choose an elite crew member to accompany you on your adventure.
Choose your player's starting level to enable the purchase of better ship mods.
Select one of 27 starting destinations. Upon entering your ship, transit via autopilot to the destination.
Pick how the game's main quest begins or choose to ignore it.
Use the new POI's facilities: Suit and weapon workbenches, mission terminals, and a med facility.
Utilize the new POI anytime during your game. It remains available to trade throughout.
PEDESTRIAN STARTS Pedestrian starts strand you in a major population center without access to a ship. You will need to earn credits to unlock your ship before adventuring off-world. In pedestrian starts, the main quest starts when/if you travel to the Vectera mine and enter the elevator room. Pedestrian starts offer the following options:
Choose from one of twelve pedestrian starts spread across Akila City, Cydonia, Neon, and New Atlantis. Select a start whose reward ship caters to your playing style: Fighter, Hauler, or Explorer Review the unique backstory for each start that explains your predicament and how to gain access to your ship. Modify the difficulty of the start by reducing or increasing the Credits required to access your ship.
SHIP OWNER STARTS In these starts, you are already a pilot and own a basic ship. You start at the impound facility on Montara Luna where you can purchase some supplies before adventuring. The main quest ("One Small Step") begins when/if you travel to Vectera mine and enter the elevator room. Characteristics of ship-owner starts are:
Pick your start from 28 predefined starts. Each start has a specific destination and ship type. Your gear and starting credits are randomly chosen when you begin the game.
NG+ STARTS RYOS supports NG+. You can start as the Starborn and choose all the NG+ options you want in effect. If you have played through the normal game started via RYOS, each passage through Unity will offer a chance to tweak options before continuing. The options for NG+ starts are as follows:
Set the number of times you've passed through Unity from 0 to 10. Ten provides the best ship and spacesuit. Select which of the 11 universe variants you will encounter. (Your Unity passage count must be 2 or greater). Choose the percentage chance you will encounter a variant universe. Base game is 15%, RYOS default is 100%. Select a Starborn power if you so desire. Select your starting Credits Select your starting Level Select a Starting Companion
RYOS REQUIREMENTS A new game start with RYOS installed and active and the Free Lanes update installed.
RYOS COMPATIBILITY I have made every effort to avoid changing Starfield's base records and making cell edits. However, this game alters the alters the main quest, so any mods that do likewise will likely create a conflict. Mods that alter Akila, Cydonia, Neon, or New Atlantis could potentially create conflicts, so RYOS should be after them in your load order. Mods that use certain global variables used by the game's main quest ("One Small Step") may cause conflict. As conflicts arise, I will look at each to see if mitigations are possible. Only known incompatibility is Azvampyre's "Vanilla Landing Animations". This mod will prevent main quest from starting when you attempt to enter Vectera mine.
GENERAL NOTES Version 2.0 is a major overhaul of the mod. As you explore the Militia compound on Montara Luna, keep an eye out. There are one or two items that might aid you in your adventures. As you do so, you will encounter a few buildings that are inaccessible on the Militia base. They are there to accommodate future expansions for RYOS. Also, please note this mod was previously titled "Wynter's Roll Your Own Start".

2.05This patch release fixes two issues introduced with the Free Lanes update.
Issue 1: When starting or continuing an NG+ game with RYOS installed, a modal message window pops up, overlaying the main menu. The message begins "You have acquired a new Equipment Module Schematic." It requires multiple mouse clicks to clear this message. The display of this message is controlled by a global variable, which RYOS temporarily sets to prevent display until the main menu selections are made and gameplay begins.
Issue 2: Certain sounds, like gunfire, are missing upon starting the game. There can be many reasons why sounds stop playing, but in the Free Lanes update, there is a very specific cause. At startup, the base game intentionally mutes gunfire (and other) sounds then re-enables them before the pirate encounter on Vectera. In an alternate start where you have not yet travelled to Vectera, the unmute will not be triggered. To fix this, RYOS changed the CK condition that enables the gun sound muting to evaluate to false, causing the disable to be skipped. -
2.04VERSION 2.04
This is version 2.04 for the Free Lanes update. It requires Free Lanes to run. If you have not installed Free Lanes, do not download this version!
This update removes the base game's requirement to visit the Lodge with the Artifact in order to enable the Cruise Mode feature. Now, on the Player's first entry into space in his home ship, Cruise Mode will be enabled. This update does not require a new game and should work on existing RYOS saves. -
2.03This patch fixes as intermittent black screen hang when exiting the Freestar Militia Impound Warehouse on Montara Luna after purchasing weapons from the Specialist Ames. The presence of certain leveled items in Ame's inventory caused the problem and have been removed.
-
2.02This version (2.02) has following changes:
Config options for initial player Credits and Player Starting Level now apply to NG+ Starts as well as Custom Starts.
Prevents removal of the RYOS Fail-Safe Slate and Ship Transaction Slate from the player's inventory if they are still needed.
Removes the player freeze when approaching the landing pad center during ship acquisition in pedestrian starts.
Remove the script that automatically transports the player from the ship vendor hut to the landing pad after purchasing a ship at the Montara Luna impound lot.
Removes the Starborn Scorpius spaceship from the ship vendor on Montara Luna.
Adds new fail-safe options for the quest "Dirt Bound" and a general purpose fail-safe for any unexpected issues.
Fixes an issue where choosing the NG+ configuration options after passing through Unity will not let the player get passed the character customization screen to continue the game.
Fixes an issue with the Starship Engineering Perk level being reduced from four to three during interactions with Ship Vendors.
Fixes an issue in Pedestrian Starts where the player is issued a second helmet instead of a backpack.
Fixes an issue where the NAT Transit sometimes fails to load its destination cell, freezing game.
Fixes an issue where RYOS attempts to deliver purchased ships that the player can't fly because of a low Piloting skill.
Changes the ship acquisition script in Pedestrian Starts to wait until the player has closed his inventory before summoning his ship to reduce the possibility of a mod conflict.
Adds automatic recovery code for certain mod conflicts that can leave an invisible ship on landing pad, preventing the player ship from landing..

2.01This version (2.01) is a fix patch that addresses the following issues:
Issue #1
The Waggoner's Farm on Montara Luna is missing from the game and inaccessible. A corrupted record resulting from an XEdit save of the adwryos.esm caused the problem. This fix repairs the damaged record to allow aggoner's Farm to show up as a POI on the star map and allow landing there.
Issue #2
Sustenance features are not working properly. Prior to this version, sustenance only partially worked. In order for the user to see any sustenance data on the player health screen, it was required that the user change game settings for sustenance to "positive only" before starting the game. With this update, sustenance works normally. It will sync automatically whenever the game settings change and both "positive only" and "positive and negative" settings work properly.
#Issue #3
The compass disappears from the HUD upon entering the Lodge during Custom Starts. This fix will ensure that doesn't happen in future starts. With this patch (2.01) installed, if you have already encountered the problem you can do a save in any exterior cell then reload your save to restore the compass to the HUD.
#Issue #4
In pedestrian starts, you must call your ship when you have earned it through the quest. If you call your ship while standing in the middle of the landing pad and refuse to move until it lands, you will be unable to move once the ship is sitting on top of you. Now, there are warnings and if you approach to close while the landing is in progress, you will become immobile until the landing completes.
#Issue #5
A number of typos and object placement issues were addressed. All fixed issues were cosmetic and none affected gameplay. -
2.0Major expansion. New options, new POI, new starts, NG+ support.
-
1.01==Patch Update to Provide Fixes ==
This version update includes the following changes.
BUG FIXES:
Fix for the quest "One Small Step" being updated as you travel around New Atlantis, even though the quest had not been started. This problem could result in the main quest "One Small Step" starting before going to Vectera Mine.
Fix for "Pedestrian Start". When the player pays off his ship's lien, the Credits are not removed from his inventory. Now, the Credits are properly adjusted.
Fix for "Pedestrian Start" to eliminate a cheat. The cheat is accomplished by upgrading your ship at ship services. This will cause your ship to fly to the Akila Spaceport. The fix allows you to upgrade your ship but prevents the ship from escaping the lien location and landing in the spaceport.
IMPROVEMENTS
Removed the script that empties and restores your inventory at the Vectera Mine elevator switch. Instead, the main quest now no longer empties your inventory. This should eliminate a lot of the mod conflicts players have been experiencing when the Vectera Mine elevator switch is activated.
Added the option to customize your character before entering the starting area in the "Roll Your Own Start" and "Roll Your Own Start Extended" starts. Previously, this option was available only on the "Quick Start" and "Pedestrian Start".

Over the years I've found myself less-and-less interested in modding Bethesda games. Alternate start mods are one of the very few exceptions to this. On subsequent playthroughs, I find them essential to diving into various roleplaying concepts and characters. RYOS is an excellent example of AltStart done right. Tons of options, including MQ skipping/delaying, and overall a great canvas for creating YOUR adventure.
I really liked the concept of this mod. I wanted a way to change my starting scenario as a character, and this provides lots of options to control that - especially if you plan to skip the main storyline with Constellation. You can control whether you have a ship to start with or not - even setting a background where you must earn enough credits to recover your starting ship (often having to buy it back from someone). The circumstances you pick also dictates the location you'll start at in the game. The menu to set things up can be a bit confusing, but this may be more a symptom of the limitations with modding a start in Starfield. The starting location on Montara Luna didn't seem to provide much to do when I first tried the mod months ago. There's a couple of vendors to help equip you if you chose to start with some extra credits.
