Cost Of Spacing

Cost of Spacing is a lightweight implementation of a 'Space Economy' - Flying around the cosmos is no longer free!
You are now responsible for paying all costs related to flying, landing, maintaining, provisioning and operating a Spaceship - as well as all relevant local fees and taxes.
What is the Cost of Spacing? All values are calculated each time you make port and condensed into a single payment.
- Ship Costs scale off of your ship’s size and crew complement. They simulate Fuel, Ammunition, Wages, and Provisions.
- Port Costs scale off of what location you are visiting. They simulate landing fees, ship services, and even heatleech inspections.
- Social Costs are small, flat taxes unique to each city. They don’t really do anything, of course, you just have to pay them - it's just like the real thing!
- Stipends are rewards from various factions that offset the amount paid. For instance, the Jemison Independent Pilot’s Grant pays a portion of all fees for rookie pilots until they reach a certain level or join a Faction.
Auxiliary systems Most of these can be disabled under Gameplay Options.
- Travel will slowly accumulate ‘wear-and-tear’ to simulate systems damage taken from regular use.
- Whenever you make port, there is a chance you will incur a slight cost for maintenance, which will remove some of this simulated damage.
- Maintenance is performed for free at your Outposts and certain unique starstations.
- Certain rare events may occur that are significantly more expensive than normal repairs, so always budget carefully.
- Repairs will automatically be conducted if your hull is very low when making port. It's for your own safety - but you do have to pay for it.
- Each time you cannot pay the port cost, a strike is incurred.
- After three strikes, you incur a bounty of the total amount owed to the local authorities.
- No penalty is incurred if you have insufficient funds when docking with a starstation.
Modifier System Cost of Spacing factors in dozens of modifiers for a truly immersive and reactive simulation. The following are just individual examples and are not a complete list.
- Constellation will pay all fees for the player while flying the Frontier during the early game.
- Neon has expensive taxes - but Neon Street Rats don't have to pay them! They're just for tourists.
- The Vanguard gets a small travel budget anywhere in the cosmos.
- The comparatively less wealthy Freestar Collective only pays fees for Rangers within Freestar Space.
Configuration Cost of Spacing's general Scaling, Notifications, and Subsystems can be configured via the corresponding Gameplay Options. Selecting RealFuel under the [COST OF SPACING] option will automatically refuel the player's vessel and alter the derived fuel cost to be more accurate. This should be used with mods that add fuel consumption mechanics.
Compatibility Cost of Spacing is generally compatible with everything and no vanilla records are touched.
