Books, movies, TV - what do you prefer for scifi?

Here's some of the things I've loved to read/watch recently and further in the past:

The Expanse - Loved the TV series, but I haven't watched the last season and I need to read the book series. Anyone read the books? Are they better than the TV show?

Murderbot - I read most of the books (I think I have not caught the last couple yet). Apple TV made it into a show that has only aired one season so far. I really like both.

Star Wars - I've watched pretty much all the movies, and I've been spending time with my kids watching the animated series. We finished Clone Wars not long ago and fell in love with Ashoka. We moved onto Rebels and just finished season 1. I had seen the live-action Ashoka before, but I really should have watched Rebels first. I've also seen at least the first 2-3 seasons of the Mandolarian, but my interest in it faded as the seasons went on. We loved Rogue One, so I've been meaning to watch Andor.

Star Trek - I've watched all the classic movies and parts of the classic, TNG, DS9, and Voyager with a bit of Enterprise. I have seen the newer movies, too, which I liked. I have tried to get into the newer shows, but I just lose interest pretty quick. My mother was a huge Trekkie, so I got exposure more when I was young.

Babylon 5 - Loved the series when it aired and I still go back and try to watch select episodes I loved. I want to rewatch the whole series, but it has no ad-free streaming home I can find. You can watch it with ads on Roku. I need to just cave and buy the series.

Dungeon Crawler Carl - I've been trying to work my way through that book series. I made it into book 4 before my interest started to wane. Too many competing interests for my free time. 😀

X-Men - I grew up loving the X-Men animated series in the 90s. My favorite was Gambit and Rogue. That love has never faded, and I hope X-Men '97 season 2 does well by those two after the emotional roller coaster of the first season. The live-action X-Men movies also did both dirty. Gambit was hardly anywhere. His appearance in Deadpool was appreciated, but I wasn't a fan of Channing Tatum in the role and most of his lines was just goofy/weird. For Rogue, I want the one from the comics - not this child that Wolverine had to save in the movies.

Matrix - I loved the first two and the third was passable. I haven't watched the latest one for fear it would ruin my memory of the original triology.

Battlestar Galactica - I really liked the remake series. It's been awhile since I saw it. I never watched the original series.

Tron - I loved Tron: Legacy and the original Tron was neat for its time but hasn't aged too well. I have not yet tried Tron Ares. I've heard really bad things about it, and I'm no fan of Jared Leto.

Dune - I need to read the book series. I loved the mini-series the Scifi Channel made years ago for Dune, and I liked the movie from the 80s. I watched the first part of the recent Dune movie, but I didn't care for the direction they were taking Part 2 so I haven't watched it yet.

I'm sure there's more, but I cannot think of them now. What are yours?

The ones for me growing up were watching Star Wars (original), Star Trek Voyager, Stargate, Starship troopers but the most impactful one would be Starcraft (though technically not book/watchable) because my father played a lot of RTS during those times. Going back, I also enjoyed x-men but I was more gravitated towards the action than the science of it haha. The matrix franchise was awesome in exploring concepts about reality, (imagine console addperk = I know kungfu), as well as the machines and mechs in the 2nd movie. of recent would be Ready Player One, Chappie, Mandalorian, Rogue One, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Dune...

I'll echo your list and add a few items:

TV - Farscape. Fantastic show. Holds up really well. Great, long running plot/character arcs. Jim Henson Creature Factory creations in pretty much every episode. If it's not on your watch list already, it is now.

Movies - A recent one that comes to mind is Prospect. It's an indie film (starring Sophie Thatcher and Pedro Pascal!) made on a shoestring budget that nonetheless manages to create a believable sci-fi world.

Books - Anything by Larry Niven. Especially his Known Space setting.

Thanks for the adds!

I could not get into Farscape as a kid, but I missed it from the beginning and found it confusing to join in the middle. I need to give it another try from the start. According to the Just Watch app, 3 of its 4 seasons are on Amazon Prime, so I'll try to check it out.

I haven't heard of the others, so I'll look them up. Thanks for the suggestions!

It also helped remind me of two other one-off movies that I liked a lot: Arrival and Interstellar. The last one, especially, is one I've watched a few times now. I was always fascinated by the effects on time when traveling to different worlds where gravity manipulated it so much.

There was a book I read years ago, that I cannot remember the name of, that I liked a lot about a war that waged across centuries due to suspended animation during travel, I think. There was a disjointed love story that unfolded during letters to one another.
