Favorite traits and mods for weapons?

Weapons in Starfield are vast and varied, and to add more into that variety are traits and mods. Traits can make or break a weapon whether one wants to use it or not, and exactly what traits those are depends on personal preferences and type of build for the character. Even then, we all got specific traits we love seeing on weapons of different rarities. At least with mods, those are fully in the player's control, just need the materials and skills to apply them. So what is desirable is more accessible.

What are you guy's favorite weapon traits and mods, favorite combos, and is it more of a general usage or specific usage?

There's a lot of great traits in Starfield that can make a build go the extra mile with the right gun. I, personally, love finding them and seeing how they work in action and determine if it's the right fit for the build I am going for. Unlike armor, guns for me do not tend to change by the areas I go to. I tend to carry 2 different guns at a time, in case the fighting gets crazy or I need a different approach to win the fight. Despite all of that, I still have some favorite traits I love seeing on certain types of guns no matter the build. They are just handy to have and elevates the advantage on my side that much more so, especially if the gun is already a higher quality and one of the type of guns I love using.

One-Inch Punch: great for pistols and rifles at short range

Furious: a must-need for auto weapons to save bullets and rip through enemies without breaking a sweat

Oxygenated: A must-have for sniping builds, which is the type of build I go for the most in my playthroughs.

Extended Magazine: Love this trait on shotguns, since they pack a heck of punch but reloading so often puts you at a disadvantage. This one helps a ton!

Skip Shot: Also great for shotguns or weapons that shoot slower in general. That extra hit can mean the difference between an injury or no injury, or even preventing death.

Combo-wise, any of the elemental traits mixed in with Skip Shot is fantastic, or mixing the Rapid trait with Furious really makes the combat insane to look at in a fun way, or Hitman with Oxygenated pairing well for any sniper there.

For awhile I was using the Laredo Lever Action Rifle which was fun. I like the sound and "feel" of it - especially if you like space cowboy/cowgirl type of characters (which I lean into a lot with Bounty Hunter clothing from zone79). It is a single shot that is a bit underpowered unless you run Darkstar and crank up its tier. I stopped running Darkstar to get back to the challenge with mostly vanilla weapons, though.

Lately, I have been experimenting with the Weapon Test Lab missing crate items - which are grossly overpowered and just silly fun sometimes. I would have to crank up the difficulty to keep using them, though, so I won't run with them on the regular.

The one I cannot live without now is the Legendary Module Recycler. I got so tired of being at the mercy of RNG for unique drops - especially when I started making more new characters more often. You just cannot do the grind over and over for every character. This helps me accumulate the legendary traits I want then apply them to whatever guns or gear I want to use at the time. I know Darkstar and McClarence Outfitters lets you do similar things, but they are not as efficient as this LMR mod.

Smart! I never used mods like those before for applying traits, to be honest, but sounds handy getting the specific guns you want. I won't lie, I actually do not mind the RNG (thanks diablo series) for traits and weapon looting in general. If anything, it got me using and understanding traits that I may have not bother to use. Will it be nice to have a certain trait for a certain gun? Yes. Can I live without it? Technically, also yes.

But perhaps I'll dabble with these mods and see what I'm missing out. ๐Ÿ‘€

It is mostly the RNG for armor that bugs me. There are a few really good legendary traits and then the rest contribute very little. Then there's so many vanilla suits that are very weak for a good legendary trait to land on and be wasted. I like being able to pluck good traits off a ground crew suit, for instance, and stick it on some suit that can actually protect me.

The RNG on Diablo felt better to me - in part because there was so much gear to collect. You tended to always be getting new gear that was useful in some spot (with most traits being valuable).

I realized later I didn't speak to legendary traits. For guns, I'm less picky than with armor (which I replied to on that thread). Here's some rules I go with:

  • Single shot guns, especially sniper weapons, need Instigating to pack more punch on that first shot
  • Automatic weapons often need Extended Magazine to deal more damage before needing to reload
  • Shattering is a great add for just about any weapon to help break higher armor enemies.
  • Automatic weapons with very high rates of fire, like Magshear, can certainly benefit from Lacerate or Furious (if that's the one I recall stacking damage on each shot that lands).
